Job Summary

Serve as the lead building automation technician overseeing the installation, maintenance, programming, and optimization of campus-wide Building Automation Systems (BAS) and HVAC control systems. Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and coordination across departments to ensure efficient, safe, and sustainable building operations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and maintain HVAC control systems including pneumatic, electric, electronic, and direct digital controls (DDC), ensuring compliance with design specifications and safety standards.
  • Perform installation, calibration, and commissioning of HVAC control systems
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot control logic using protocols such as BACnet, Tridium Niagara (R2, AX, N4), LonWorks, and Modbus. Customize control sequences to meet specific building requirements and ensure optimal indoor air quality.
  • Lead preventive maintenance efforts and perform diagnostics and repairs on BAS networks, energy meters, and environmental systems. Respond to emergency calls and participate in on-call rotations to minimize downtime.
  • Mentor and guide the BAS technicians, sharing best practices and supporting professional development. Coordinate training programs and ensure quality assurance across control system operations.
  • Collaborate with HVAC mechanics, central plant operators, electricians and fire alarm system technicians, ITS personnel, contractors, and other stakeholders to manage control system projects, budgets, and upgrades. Ensure quality workmanship and adherence to timelines.
  • Maintain accurate BAS and controls system as-built records and maintain inventory of equipment, parts and tools. Generate performance reports and update preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Promote a safety-first culture, ensure compliance with local codes and standards, and support the college’s sustainability and antiracism initiatives through responsible resource use and inclusive practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in engineering technology, control or HVAC technology or a related degree, plus a minimum of two years related experience; or equivalent 5 years of related experience (in lieu of degree).
  • Certification or familiarity with front end devices or programming and knowledge of and/or experience working with control industry protocols, such as Lonworks, Bacnet™, Modbus, etc.
  • Knowledge of indoor air quality and safety standards; knowledge of blueprint reading and occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Physical requirements include good vision and hearing; ability to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing stairs and ladders, and working in very tight spaces and very high places; conditions frequently very noisy and dusty.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

  • $32.00 - $38.00 per hour
