Job Summary

Join Colorado College as a Groundskeeper and play a vital role in shaping the beauty and safety of our campus environment! As a key member of our Facilities/Operations team, you’ll do more than maintain landscapes—you’ll help create welcoming outdoor spaces that inspire students, staff, and visitors every day.


In this hands-on role, you’ll be responsible for the care and enhancement of lawns, gardens, and campus grounds. Your work will include planting and nurturing a variety of plant life, ensuring walkways and parking lots are safe and clear in all seasons, and maintaining the equipment that keeps our campus running smoothly. You’ll also have the opportunity to share your expertise by guiding support staff and student workers, and you’ll collaborate closely with a diverse team to achieve the college’s goals.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in grounds maintenance and the propagation and care of grass, flowers, plants and shrubs; responsible for the aesthetics of the College to include weeding, trimming, refreshing materials, and cleaning up debris and trash as well as total grounds detail responsibility for an assigned area.
  • Plant, transplant, cultivate, irrigate, spray, and trim a variety of plant life.
  • Inspect plants, shrubs and grass for symptoms of disease and nutritional deficiencies, prepare mixture of fertilizers, insecticides, and other chemical compounds used in the care of plant life.
  • Maintain grounds equipment and vehicles.
  • Identify and perform routine preventive maintenance of campus grounds including flatwork items including asphalt, concrete, and striping.
  • Proactively remove ice, snow and debris from sidewalks, streets and grounds.
  • Assist in training, providing work direction, and problem solve for support staff and student workers.
  • Work as an effective team member by communicating with others, through collaboration and encouragement of others, and assisting others to ensure accomplishment of the goals of the department and college.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent work experience plus a minimum of one year of related experience
  • Demonstrated success working as a team member
  • Ability to communicate effectively and develop positive relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds
  • Knowledge of plant and landscape care
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Knowledge of and ability to use a personal computer
  • Ability to operate landscaping equipment and utilize basic gardening tools.

Physical requirements include exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and carrying loads up and down stairs, and occasional climbing of ladders; continual walking, sometimes on rough terrain pushing or pulling tools and equipment; working in all weather conditions and noisy, dusty conditions; good vision and hearing essential; exposure to chemicals and related hazards.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record that is insurable by Colorado College’s motor vehicle insurance carrier.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

  • $17.74 to $20.40 per hour
