Job Summary

The Arts and Crafts program is a part of Student Life and serves the Colorado College campus community (students, staff, and faculty) with co-curricular programs. The Ceramic Technician and Instructor position is an occasional position between 10-15 hours a week and reports to the Director of Arts and Crafts. Ceramics Education is a core element of the program and supports over 50 students each block in the studio through classes, workshops and independent projects. This position will teach classes and workshops, and is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, orderly studio environment stocked with the necessary supplies to support the daily functions of the studio. Additionally, the position will work with the Director to establish safety protocols and schedules that keep the studio running smoothly and will also make clay, glazes, research new materials and techniques, and maintain wheels and kilns.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining an organized, clean, and safe clay studio.
  • Create firing schedules, load, monitor, and fire kilns weekly (gas and electric kilns). Meet deadlines for processing work each Block.
  • Teach two co-curricular wheel-throwing classes (4 hours a week each block).
  • Process Materials: make clay, recycle slip, and formulate and mix glazes.
  • Maintain a material inventory and keep Safety Data Sheets up to date for ceramic materials.
  • Work in tandem with Director and Environmental Health and Safety to arrange proper disposal of materials.
  • Track material usage within the studio and communicate supply and equipment orders to the director on a regular basis.
  • In collaboration with the director, establish safety procedures and create accessible, accurate, user-friendly signage, and instructions for various processes and equipment to ensure best health and safety practices.
  • Maintain equipment and tools and makes repairs when necessary; ensure that needed parts and equipment are stocked for repairs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to evaluate clay program, research new materials and techniques, and provide assistance to visiting artists and programmatic initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in fine arts or equivalent work experience with a minimum of two years of related experience.
  • Experience teaching wheel throwing and hand-building techniques.
  • Experience firing a range of kilns (electric and gas).
  • Experience in mixing clay and glaze chemistry.
  • Knowledgeable in best practices regarding the handling and usage of ceramic raw materials in the studio.
  • Experience teaching students in an academic or community school setting and ability to communicate effectively.
  • High attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and ability to problem solve.
  • Basics knowledge of kiln and wheel repair.
  • Frequent bending, prolonged standing, and reaching and often lifting up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Master of Fine Arts.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

  • Anticipated hiring range will be $21-25/hour.
