Job Summary
The Interim Coordinator works to support the diverse Muslim community at Colorado College by helping create an inclusive, vibrant, and pluralistic community, by effectively engaging students across a diversity of Muslim expression and serving as a resource in a pluralistic setting. They provide a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages our diverse Muslim community to grow spiritually, culturally, and with their intersecting identities, supporting their holistic wellbeing. They serve as spiritual advisor to Muslim students and to the Muslim Student Association, maintaining regular contact with student leaders and members of the group through mentorship, collaboration and support. While primarily focused on Muslim Life (programming and spiritual care) the Interim Coordinator also contributes to interfaith and interspiritual programs of the Chaplain’s Office. The position includes work on Fridays with MSA; regular office hours, attendance at some evening, weekend programs, holidays, and special events to be determined based on the needs and schedules of the Interim Coordinator, students, Chaplain’s Office, and wider CC Community. The Coordinator of Muslim Life responds with inclusivity, thoughtfulness, and care to the diverse needs, fostering a lively Muslim community at CC.
Responsibilities
· Provide vision, direction, and guidance for learning circles, Juammah prayers, Halaqua study, community building, and other learning and support.
· Provides for Muslim spiritual, religious, ritual, and cultural celebrations and programming that educates and celebrates the diversity of Muslim life on campus and the world. Fosters Islamic learning and intellectual life via discussions, programs, and lectures, ensuring meaningful and diverse opportunities for Islamic expression, consistently promoting a welcoming and lively pluralistic Muslim community.
· Serve as Coordinator or Muslim Life and religious advisor to Muslim students and Muslim Student Association (MSA).
· Cultivates relationships that engender holistic personal growth and develops student leadership, listening and responding to individual and campus needs.
· Promote awareness and understanding of Islamic traditions and culture across campus.
· Cultivate, supports, and mentors Muslim student leaders in developing programs which foster and celebrate Muslim Life on campus; such as regular meetings, iftars, social activities, etc. Support weekly/blockly/yearly rituals and programs, providing ongoing leadership through attendance, presence, and coordination.
· Cultivate partnerships within the diverse Muslim communities and organizations within local/regional area, serving as a liaison from the Chaplain’s Office to local communities/organizations.
· Makes all reasonable efforts to support and accommodate religious and spiritual needs of Muslim students throughout the academic year.
· Serves as resource for Muslim staff and faculty as needed.
· Coordinates Ramadan preparation and support in cooperation with the Chaplain’s Office.
· Coordinate Muslim leadership, budget and program support for MSA and Muslim Life with the College Chaplain.
· Communicate with CC families, friends, and alums interested in Muslim Life.
· Work with the professional staff of the Chaplains’ Office to support the goals and missions of the office including programs which serve the interfaith and pluralistic religious needs of our campus.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree plus experience providing leadership within a Muslim community; trained in the Muslim tradition and able to facilitate Islamic study, prayer and gatherings; organizational, communication and spiritual care skills; ability to provide a welcoming space to a diverse student population and college community; previous work and/or volunteer experience, preferably in a Muslim organization and/or working with college-age adults; self-motivated
and the ability to work independently, while also appreciating supervision and team-work: a commitment to creating an inclusive, vibrant and pluralistic Muslim community; ability to engage students in Muslim Life and serve as a resource in a pluralistic setting; ability to work flexible hours including some evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events and to engage students thoughtful and with care. Must be able to practice empathy and non-judgement consistently and have appropriate understanding of boundaries and power within spiritual settings. Must be able to demonstrate experience of spiritual care for diverse populations (ethnic, racial, sexual, gender, cultural, religious, age, ability).
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
· Demonstrate understanding of the role of Chaplaincy within higher education.
· Ability to advance inclusion and equity through the entry point of religious literacy.
· Ability to provide personal and group spiritual care and council.
· Hold room for ambiguity, disagreement, non-resolution, and grief and suffering.
· Ability to design large, inclusive rituals, celebrations, and gatherings.
· Be conversant in the diverse religious, social, and cultural expressions within Islam.
· Work in a collaborative and relational manner; balancing student needs and intuitional priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related field such as Islamic Studies, Religious Studies or equivalent; training in spiritual and pastoral care, and 3+ years of related experiences working in Muslim communities.
