Job Summary

The Temporary Archival Research Assistant will support Dr. Roybal’s research project focused on María Theresa “Theresita” Sandoval, by locating, reviewing, and documenting materials from archival collections, libraries, databases, and other historical sources. This role involves assisting with primary source research, organizing findings, and maintaining accurate records of archival materials. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working with historical documents and research tools.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct archival and primary source research in physical and digital collections.
  • Identify relevant materials including manuscripts, records, photographs, newspapers, maps, and other historical documents.
  • Create organized research notes, summaries, and source citations.
  • Maintain databases or spreadsheets tracking archival materials and research progress.
  • Assist with digitization, cataloging, and metadata entry for archival materials.
  • Support the preparation of research reports, publications, exhibits, or grant materials.
  • Handle archival materials carefully and follow repository guidelines.
  • Communicate findings clearly to project supervisor.
  • Perform other research or administrative tasks related to archival projects as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to handle fragile historical materials carefully.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while conducting research.
  • Occasional lifting of archival boxes up to 10 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Southwest Studies.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational ability.
  • Ability to read and interpret historical documents.
  • Familiarity with citation practices and academic research methods.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with archival collections, special collections, or historical repositories.
  • Familiarity with archival management systems or digital archives.
  • Experience with digitization workflows or metadata standards.
  • Coursework or training in archival studies, public history, or library science.
