Job Summary

The Paraprofessional for the Environmental Studies & Science Program provides multifaceted support to faculty, staff, and students—enhancing academic experiences, assisting with instruction, and contributing to the overall success of departmental activities and initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Assist professors in teaching students; provide office hours for student tutoring; conduct help/study sessions; develop and assess quizzes, lab journals and lab-related work and materials for EV faculty as needed.
  • Read, study, and be familiar with textbooks, laboratory guides, laboratory and field equipment, and other materials used by students.
  • Coordinate and participate in EV Studies & Science Program field trips; plan meals, coordinate the purchase of food, help prepare meals, procure, and maintain cooking supplies; contact tour sites, drive vans, including 12-passenger vans, with trailers, assemble field equipment, supervise students, and assist faculty with instruction in the field.
  • Work with the EV Technical Director on laboratory assignments and field projects, including preparing laboratories for specific projects, documenting laboratory and field procedures, procuring the necessary equipment, and cleaning up after exercises; maintain current knowledge of lab and field equipment and procedures, and assist in acquiring and maintaining equipment.
  • Work with the Administrative Assistant to produce departmental newsletters, design posters for events, arrange special activities and annual functions (i.e., Baccalaureate Reception and Linnemann Lecture on the Environment), and assist with a variety of tasks as requested.
  • Take lead on the Environmental Studies & Science Program social media accounts and representation to build community, to share and spread knowledge, information, activities, or events valued by the department, to engage with other on-campus and off-campus groups, and to continue to keep the alumni network active.
  • Assist in maintenance of the EV Studies & Science Program laboratories; wash glassware, prepare reagents, perform inventories and student-faculty research; supervise students working in laboratories and provide instruction on safety and the proper use of and care for equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or a related field, and an outstanding academic record and significant undergraduate experience with class projects and field trips in Environmental Science, including coursework and research projects; ability to take initiative, to be a self-starter, to make decisions as necessary, and work independently as a professional; ability to plan and coordinate field trips, including meal planning and cooking; flexibility to participate on overnight field trips requiring extended travel away from campus; experience with outdoor fieldwork and data collection; ability to responsible and carefully perform laboratory tasks; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with a diverse population of professors, students, and staff; ability to communicate effectively and develop positive relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds; working knowledge of computer hardware and software (GIS, Python, Microsoft Excel in particular); Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is insurable by Colorado College’s motor vehicle insurance carrier.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety and procedures
  • Experience with Colorado College Environmental Studies & Science Program and the block plan
  • Basic first aid skills
  • Experience teaching or mentoring
  • Interest in environmental science and policy issues
  • Interest in teaching and higher education.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

  • $20.03 per hour
