Job Summary
Helps maintain a safe and secure campus learning environments for all by protecting lives, property, and reputation of Colorado College and the greater community, including guests and visitors. Campus Safety functions twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, therefore, a Campus Safety Officer can be assigned to work weekends, holidays, overnight shifts or critical incidents.
Responsibilities
Communication Operations: Act as the primary contact for communications via phone, email, radio, and in person, using customer service skills to gather, prioritize, and relay information. Maintain knowledge of department protocols and ensure accurate documentation of calls and follow-ups. Monitor security systems (CCTV, alarms, emergency communications), generate service calls, and dispatch appropriate services. Serve as a liaison for campus support resources and manage office equipment such as keys and radios.
Patrol and Community Service: Patrol campus areas to prevent theft, vandalism, and trespass, and investigate suspicious activities. Ensure building security, monitor for hazards, and enforce parking and traffic regulations. Engage with students, staff, and guests, fostering rapport within the college community. Complete logs, reports, and provide safe transportation around campus.
Emergency Response: Respond to fire alarms, accidents, and minor injuries, assisting emergency personnel and deciding appropriate courses of action. Serve as the initial contact during emergencies, use de-escalation techniques, and manage incident reports. Provide security services for special events and maintain knowledge of the college’s Emergency Management Plan to effectively handle critical incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate plus a minimum of three years of related experience or equivalent education; must be 21 and possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is insurable by Colorado College’s motor vehicle insurance carrier; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent customer service skills; ability to exercise good judgment and handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion; ability to think critically and problem solve; ability to engage and develop working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds; proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; ability to operate computer equipment and a 2-way radio. Physical requirements include ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions; walking, prolonged standing, climbing of stairs; ability to lift/carry up to 20 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate degree or certifications in a related field to include NIMS ICS certification; experience in higher education setting, campus safety, security, hospitality services, and/or emergency responses services.
