Job Summary

Colorado College is hiring a tenure track assistant professor in sedimentary geology to join the Geology Department starting in August 2025. We seek an individual who uses quantitative methods and the rock record to explore topics of societal relevance. We welcome researchers studying: (1) extreme events, such as abrupt climate transitions, flooding, mass movements, extinction events, etc.; (2) sedimentary and associated responses to tectonic or other external forcings; or (3) carbon cycle through time. Well-qualified candidates will have a demonstrated interest in teaching and a commitment to conducting research with undergraduate students. The successful candidate will teach introductory-level courses in earth systems and earth history, an upper-division process-oriented sedimentology course, and advanced topical and/or methodological electives in their area of expertise. Strong candidates will present a research agenda that complements the existing disciplinary expertise in the Department and/or the College.

Colorado College is a private, liberal arts institution situated in the Rocky Mountain region. It is characterized by a unique Block Plan schedule in which professors teach, and students take, one course at a time for 3.5 weeks. The Geology Department has a tradition of leveraging the focused class time afforded by the Block Plan to engage in experiential learning in a variety of contexts (e.g., field, laboratory) using a variety of methods (e.g., models, analytical instrumentation, etc.). In addition to College funds to support such endeavors, the Geology department employs dedicated technical support staff and maintains laboratory facilities to enable project-based learning and faculty research (https://www.coloradocollege.edu/academics/dept/geology/facilities/facilities.html). Professors teach six of the eight blocks in an academic year, including one block dedicated to mentoring undergraduate research. Successful applicants should illustrate their familiarity with modern pedagogies, be comfortable incorporating field teaching opportunities, and be interested in creative interdisciplinary teaching.

The College actively promotes a dynamic and inclusive environment in which students and employees of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives can learn and work, and is committed to becoming an antiracist institution (see https://www.coloradocollege.edu/other/antiracism-commitment/). The Geology Department has a goal of broadening student participation in earth sciences and incorporating issues of environmental justice into our curriculum. Applicants should include a statement describing how they will contribute to these college-wide and departmental goals. The Geology Department believes the College grows stronger by recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty committed to building an inclusive community. Candidates who can contribute to this goal are particularly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in a field of geoscience by the start of employment; prior teaching experience and expertise in process-oriented sedimentology is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Teaching experience as instructor of record; a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching and research; and a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in geoscience are high priorities.
