Job Summary
The Collections Assistant maintains intellectual and physical control of the nearly 18,000 artworks within the care of the Fine Arts Center Museum; cataloging and condition reporting artworks and creating pathways for access through storage, digitization, internal and external research support, and collections-focused community programming and academic engagement.
Responsibilities
• Conduct collections research, create condition reports, catalog art into the museum’s collections management database and photograph and digitize collections to EMuseum, the FAC’s online art repository.
• Provide safe transport of museum collections to and from storage, workstations, and other museum areas. Research storage solutions and construct custom housing for artworks. Participate in unpacking, installation, deinstallation, packing, and couriering of objects as necessary.
• Further the museum’s NAGPRA compliance work by supporting consultation with authorized tribal representatives, ethical repatriation, and duty of care implementation. Contribute to the museum’s ethical collections stewardship by supporting conversations with descendent communities, artists, and other community stakeholders to inform collections storage, care, and description.
• Facilitate collections research through class visits, remote research requests, and in-person research visits. Increase transparency around collections stewardship through collections-based community programs and engagement opportunities.
• Oversee environmental monitoring and the museum’s integrated pest management program, in coordination with the Head of Collections.
• Assist with the supervision of interns as assigned.
• Perform other collections related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in museum studies, library science, art history, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience of proper museum standards and best practices in the care of art collections.
• Understanding of preservation needs for various media such as works on paper, paintings, metal, organic materials, etc.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate effectively and develop positive relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds.
• Demonstrated computer literacy in word processing and imaging applications such as Adobe Creative Suite.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
• The ability to work some evenings and weekends.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record that is insurable by Colorado College’s motor vehicle insurance carrier.
• Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull delicate, awkward-shaped, and over-sized artworks weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching, and bending required throughout the workday.
• Must be able to ascend and descend a ladder.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in museum studies, library science, art history, or related field.
• The ability to travel, both domestically and internationally.
• 1-2 years’ experience working with fine, modern, and contemporary art, ethnographic collections, and archival materials in a museum setting.
• Knowledge of collections management software such as TMS or Past Perfect.
